WHAT ATTRACTS TALENT

Grabbing candidate attention at the first stage of the recruitment process is crucial when it comes to capturing the right pool of talent.

What attracts millennials to a role?

Grabbing candidate attention at the first stage of the recruitment process is crucial when it comes to capturing the right pool of talent for your business, so it’s vital you understand what millennials are looking for from their next career move.

As part of our research into the minds and motivations of today’s millennials, we found that while remuneration came out on top in terms of what attracts millennials to a role, it’s not quite the deal-breaker it once was. Only two-thirds of our survey respondents placed it in their top three must-haves.

• For more than half, office location is a top priority, so if your office isn’t in a prize spot you may want to think about sweetening the deal with the offer of flexible or remote working.

• Nearly a fifth placed a good diversity and inclusion policy in their top three considerations – so if yours isn’t up-to-date, we’d advise a conversation with HR to get the ball rolling.

• For 13%, employee recommendations add to the appeal of a company – adding even more weight to the argument for keeping your colleagues satisfied.

The bigger picture

Beyond salary and benefits, millennials want a good handle on where they’re heading: 45% placed scope for career progression as the most important consideration when choosing their next move, closely followed by flexible working (44%). For millennials, it’s never too early to discuss future moves, so if you’re keen to keep hold of your most promising people, have those conversations as soon as you’re able.

But when millennials do make the decision to leave, what spurs the move?

Poor pay is the chief motivator for 68% of people, with working environment a close second at 53%. It might not be possible to address wage concerns for every employee, but company culture is something that can be addressed without high overheads. Quick-wins include:

• Showing genuine appreciation and recognition for a job well done

• Introducing regular team-building exercises

• Displaying empathy towards your employees

• Stocking up on office treats for an afternoon pick-me-up

• Implementing flexible working

• Setting up open discussions for colleagues to make their own suggestions

Focusing on retention is a worthwhile pursuit if you consider that almost half of millennials envisage leaving a role within two years of starting – a figure that rises to exactly 50% for men.
