This is a group role responsible for managing operational safety risks, specifically, health, safety and environment. Establishing and implementing operational objectives and ensuring effective management systems, process, best practices and compliance. To drive improvements in safety and environmental management and sustainability practice across the membership.

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE TO:



  • Responsibility for ensuring group directors and department heads are compliant with the management of health and safety risks.

  • Ensuring risk assessments are adequately completed, up to date and filed as required.

  • To support members on health and safety matters and ensure they are informed of legislative changes that will impact them.

  • To promote best practice in membership in Health & Safety and Organisational Risk Management.

  • Establishing policies and procedures as required to underpin regulatory safety obligations and best practice.

  • Ensuring incidents and near misses are effectively managed, reported, investigated and appropriate remedial action is implemented.

  • Working closely with facilities team as expert in safety compliance.

  • Ensuring line managers, directors and all staff have an appropriate awareness of health and safety practices and obligations as relevant.

  • Driving improvements in environmental management and sustainability practice within membership.

  • Developing an understanding of member activities in the area of sustainability.

  • Identifying opportunities for members to further their efforts on sustainability and waste reduction.

  • Developing member engagement on environmental and sustainability though strategic planning and initiatives.

  • Add act as Secretary to the Environment Committee.

  • Establishing useful contacts and directory of organisations/platforms to be signed posted to members.

  • Keeping up to date with the sustainability agenda, new legislation and best practice guidance with a good understanding of any potential implications.

  • Preparing guidance for members in managing sustainability.

  • Gathering data for the purposes of reporting.

  • Investigating ways to reduce waste.

  • Responsibility for the achievement of departmental objectives.

  • Attending internal and external meetings and events as required.

  • Producing reports as required including management and board reports.

  • Identifying, monitoring, and analysing key metrics for the day-to-day performance of the department.

  • Create HSE related content for publications including newsletter and websites.

  • Participate at group events by creating documentation and or deliver presentations as required.

  • Managing budgets and forecasts in line with company procedure.

  • Working with members on managing their operational risk around health and safety, environment and sustainability.

  • Exercising a hands-on approach to delivering results for the business and members.

  • Maintaining departmental risk register and contributing to the wider group register as required.

  • Maintain positive and effective relationships with, internal departments, shareholders and external business partners and agencies.

  • Effectively recruit, train and manage staff as required.


SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:



  • IOSH or NEBOSH qualification

  • A good depth of knowledge cross key elements of environmental legislation

  • Experience in dealing with regulatory agencies (HSE, Environment Agency, Councils)

  • Understanding and experience of Safety/Environment Management Systems including ISO4001

  • A clear communicator able to manage and prioritise workload

  • A confident decision maker

  • Adept at building relationships with stakeholders

  • Excellent IT Skills

  • Management/supervisory experience

  • Ability to present to a variety of audiences
