Assistant Buyer

Location: Gillingham
Hours: 8:30am - 5:00pm
Salary: £28,000 - £35,000
Working Pattern: Office based initially, up to 2 days WFH post‑probation

The Opportunity

We're recruiting an Assistant Buyer to join a established construction‑led organisation delivering multiple live projects across the UK. This role offers real project ownership, exposure to senior stakeholders, and the chance to develop within a structured buying function.

This is not a passive buying support role. It suits someone who enjoys working with detailed data, technical specifications and numbers, and who is confident pushing back, negotiating and speaking with site teams and suppliers.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Managing procurement activity across multiple construction projects from start to finish

  • Sourcing and ordering materials against drawings, schedules or technical specs

  • Raising, tracking and maintaining accurate purchase orders within an in‑house ERP system

  • Working closely with site teams to confirm requirements, lead times and delivery dates

  • Comparing supplier pricing, negotiating costs and supporting value‑driven decisions

  • Maintaining detailed, structured procurement data to support cost control and reporting

  • Supporting invoice checks and ensuring accuracy between orders, deliveries and budgets

What We're Looking For

  • An Assistant Buyer looking to step into a new hands‑on, project‑led role

  • A Junior Buyer or Procurement Assistant from construction or engineering

  • A strong Project / Commercial Coordinator with solid buying exposure

You'll need:

  • Experience working with structured data (materials, costs, specs, budgets)

  • Confidence using ERP, CRM or procurement systems (exact system training provided)

  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working with numbers

  • The ability to negotiate, query discrepancies and challenge where needed

  • A proactive mindset - you don't wait to be told when something doesn't add up

Why Apply

  • Own your own projects within a supportive buying team

  • Hybrid working once established

  • Clear development path into Buyer roles

  • Well‑structured systems and processes (no chaos buying)

  • Long‑term career stability within a growing business

Benefits

  • Private medical cover

  • Hybrid working after probation

  • Company events

  • Free onsite parking

  • Cycle to Work scheme
