Looking for a new job? Here’s how to kick-start your 2012 job search

People who work in recruitment agencies know that January is often the busiest time of the year. That’s because lots of people have time to think over the Christmas period, and realise that they want a new job.

This is excellent news for all candidates, as it means that you should have your pick of vacancies to apply for once January gets into its stride. Here’s how to kick-start your job search… with any luck, you should have a new boss by the spring!

Make sure that your CV is in tip-top condition. Does it really show you off to the best of your abilities? It should be up-to-date, easy to read and full of your achievements and responsibilities. You also need to make sure that it’s free from spelling and grammatical errors.

Identify the recruitment consultants that handle the types of vacancies and industries that interest you. If you want to work in the construction industry, there’s no point sending your CV to a media recruitment agency. A targeted approach is much more effective.

Let your friends know that you are looking for a new job. They may know somebody who is hiring. Similarly, get active on LinkedIn and join some real-life professional networking groups. Sometimes, knowing the right person can help you to get a job.
