On 1st October 2010 the Equality Act 2010 was introduced and brought together nine separate pieces of legislation to simplify and strengthen discrimination and inclusion laws.
The top three issues you need to know about are:
- Positive action – The Equality Act allows you, as an employer, to take positive action if you think that employees or applicants - who share a particular positive characteristic – suffer a disadvantage connected to that characteristic, or if their participation in an activity is disproportionately low.
- Pre-employment health-related checks – Employers can no longer ask applicants about disabilities or fitness to work until a position has been directly offered.
- Pay secrecy – It is now illegal to prevent or restrict employees from discussing pay differences.
