There’s no denying the importance of confidence — when you believe in yourself, others tend to believe in you too. Some lucky people are born with bags of natural confidence, but for others, itdoesn'tcome so easily.
But happily, there is something you can do about it.
Time is of the essence
Building confidence doesn't just happen overnight. It would be downright wonderful if it did, but you’re going to have to be patient and work at this one. Think of it like any other project or training plan you've set yourself in the past, and remember how utterly fantastic the rewards will be.
Know what you have to offer
Confident people know exactly what they’re good at, how to play to their strengths, and how to make sure other people know what they’re capable of — making them great self publicists. The best way to achieve this level of confidence is to make a list of everything you’re good at. Seeing it written down will naturally boost your self esteem.
Once you know what your strengths are, share them. For example, if you’re a good writer, offer to pen something for the company blog; if you‘re an empathetic people person, volunteer to act as a mentor to a new starter. As others begin to appreciate your talents, your own confidence will start to grow.
Confident people often ooze positivity; they also tend to be the most successful. The correlation isn't coincidental. Being more positive — both at work and in your everyday life — will not only help you to feel more confident, it will also draw confident people to you. And if this feels like a bit of tall order, just observe and mirror the actions of other confident bods.
The importance of feedback
Feedback and criticism is an avoidable part of life, and it can actually be incredibly useful. Constructive criticism provides you with an opportunity to grow and develop, so try not to take negative comments to heart; instead, learn to use feedback in the way it was intended — for your own good. After all, your manger doesn't want you to fail; they want to get the very best out of you. So show them what you've got.
The beauty of confidence
Looking good (and as a result, feeling good) can be an instant boost for your confidence — in fact, it’s one of the fastest and most effective short-term solutions for making you feel like you’re ready to take on the world. If you need a bit of a lift, don the outfit that makes you feel great, put on a smile, and walk tall — the difference it makes can be remarkable.
Practice makes perfect
This part isn’t always easy, but the final step to achieving confidence is to take yourself out of your comfort zone. You could try organising an event, running a project, or offering to talk at a meeting. And if you’re worried about doing this for the first time in a professional environment, start by volunteering for work in your local community. The more you do, the more feedback you’ll get, and the more confident you’ll become.
It’s also worth remembering that in a lot of cases, some of the most ‘confident’ people are actually faking it; and there’s nothing wrong with that. Take comfort in the fact that even if you’re nervous, it is possible to fool everyone else into thinking you’re taking things calmly in your stride.
