How to convince
Below are some simple rules that will help you convince.
It is New Year and you make a new list of resolutions for the year: this year, no doubt, you will talk to your boss. Whether it is to ask for an appraisal or simply to show your skills, ask for training or even a pay rise… these simple rules will help you get your point across.
1. Do not start defeated
First rule that cannot be ignored: do not start as if it was already lost, whatever the context. Your motivation is fundamental to the conviction of your interviewer/managers, whoever they are. You are asking for a training course? Come in the meeting with the certainty you will get it, you will become a lot more convincing.
2. Put yourself in the interviewer/managers shoes
This is the key to every negotiation, whether it is about salary, business or whatever. You will have more chance to convince someone if you come down to their level. In particular, use the same lingo as them. And above all, demonstrate that your request is in the benefit of the team and the company as a whole.
3. Illustrate with concrete results
To value a competency or an achievement, you need to express them clearly. Do not start thinking that your qualities are know. Most of your achievements can be expressed with numbers, something that managers love! Why not bring a spreadsheet?
4. Show you have a clear project
Show results is good. Present a professional project is even better. It will demonstrate your motivation de improve your career. Besides, by detailing your project, you will give guides for a structured conversation. However, make sure your project will be beneficial for the company.
5. Talk about remuneration at the end
Once you have explained the results and detailed the project, then the fact that you ask for a pay rise is founded.
A good negotiation lies on your personal motivation and a good preparation. Be confident and your interlocutor will listen to what you have to say.
